A common question about EVs is whether the carbon cost of manufacturing the battery cancels out the running savings. The evidence is clear that it doesn't:
- Battery manufacturing: a 75 kWh battery produces roughly 7–9 tonnes CO₂e to manufacture.
- Annual running saving: for a UK driver doing 7,500 miles, switching from petrol to EV saves ~1.7 tonnes CO₂/year.
- Payback period: at 7,500 miles/year, the battery carbon debt is paid back in approximately 4–5 years.
- Total lifecycle saving: over a 12-year vehicle life, an EV saves roughly 15–20 tonnes CO₂ compared to a petrol equivalent.
As the electricity grid decarbonises further — the UK's grid hit 57% renewables in 2024 — EV running emissions will fall further automatically.
Does the electricity source matter?
Yes — significantly. The carbon intensity of an EV depends heavily on what electricity powers it:
- UK grid average (2024): ~47g CO₂/km — 72% better than a medium petrol car
- 100% renewable tariff: ~6g CO₂/km — 96% better than petrol
- Coal-heavy grid (e.g. India 2024): ~120g CO₂/km — approaching diesel efficiency
Charging at home on a green energy tariff maximises the climate benefit. Many EV owners switch to a green tariff when they buy their car.
What about used EVs?
Buying a used EV avoids the manufacturing carbon cost entirely (it's already been paid) while still delivering near-zero running emissions. The second-hand EV market in the UK has grown significantly since 2022, with prices falling to match used petrol cars.
